Barry Lituchy, chair of the Jasenovac Research Institute (JRI) at the Jasenovac Monument in New York.

April 22, 2026, marked the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Jasenovac concentration camp at the end of the Second World War. The concentration camp imprisoned and killed Serbs, Jews, Roma (commonly known as gypsy), other non-Catholic minorities, and Croatian Communists and anti-fascists near the end of the Second World War.

The Jasenovac Research Institute (JRI) held a wreath-laying ceremony at the Jasenovac Monument in New York to honor the victims of the genocide. JRI is committed to advancing research on these crimes, which Western scholars have often overlooked. The legacy of Jasenovac is frequently misrepresented, and its victims are sometimes ignored or harmed by Holocaust revisionism.

Between 1941 and April 1945, hundreds of thousands of Serbs were killed by the fascist Croatian Ustashe movement. Victims included 200,000 to 500,000 Serbs, at least 25,000 Jews, between 80,000, to100,000 Roma, and 10,000 to 15,000 Communists and anti-fascists of Croatian-Slovenian background.

The failure to acknowledge these crimes committed has contributed to the resurgence of fascism in the Balkans. Also noted is the continued demonization of the Serbian people by reactionary historians. The American Slav Congress, founded in 1942, supports JRI’s mission to preserve the memory of Jasenovac and seek justice for its victims.

The JRI is a non-profit human rights organization and research institute committed to establishing the truth about the Holocaust in Yugoslavia and dedicated to the search for justice for its victims. JRI will hold its annual conference online on May 17 at 12 pm EST. The American Slav Congress will participate and encourage all interested individuals to attend.
