(7th Night of Chanukah)
The Maccabean story is one of the most glorious in Jewish history, a struggle against tyranny and oppression. CHANUKAH חנוכה (literally, “dedication”) is the Festival of Dedication, also known as the Festival of Lights. The nightly kindling of the menorah with its increasingly brighter light has become a symbol for resistance to tyranny and forced assimilation.
Our Schule Class will remind us of the Chanukah tradition that preserves the concept of resistance. Today, there are stories of heroism against the fascistic acts of tyranny by the Trump Government.
In a number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that have brutalized communities, Jewish and non-Jewish people gather to resist ICE’s unjustified attacks. Whether it’s against immigrants, the LGBT+, Jews, Arabs, or any oppressed people, working-class people fight against division that bosses use to pit one group of workers against one another.
Join us in our commemoration supporting Maccabean revolt by bringing a menorah, eight candles (one for the middle candle, or shamus, and seven for the seventh night). The traditions of Chanukah are relatable to the freedom struggles of today.
