PCUSA Statement on the Attacks Against the US Department of Education by the Trump Administration
With the second administration of Donald Trump, America is seeing a radical attack on education and intellectualism from the far-right. We can clearly see these attacks coming in the form of policies such as the Crucial Communism Teaching Act, the Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling executive order which attacks diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, and policies to privatize education and remove federal oversights on how education budgets are used in states. These attacks on education are rooted in a broader attack on bourgeois democracy.
The attacks on education come from the far-right Heritage Foundation as written in their Project 2025. While the Trump campaign had tried to distance itself from Project 2025 during the election, the Project appears to have served as a road-map for the pro-Wall Street Program of the Trump Administration. On the chopping block of Project 2025 is the Federal Education Budget and the Department of Education. Trump’s administration is currently working on an executive order which would direct Trump’s handpicked Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to dismantle the Department of Education. It should be emphasized that McMahon is a notorious enemy of the public school system. What better way to get rid of something than to put its enemy in charge of its administration! It is the old “putting the fox in charge of the hen-house” strategy.
These attacks are part of a broader plan to destroy America’s bourgeois democratic system in order to replace it with a more openly dictatorial form of bourgeois rule. The goal is the same as Hitler’s and Mussolini’s seizure of power, in which they dismantled their bourgeois republics and replaced them with authoritarian regimes controlled by monopoly capital.
Comrade Lenin clearly states that communists must defend civil liberties in bourgeois democracy because the bourgeoisie cannot be relied upon to do so. We must act as the catalyst to unite all freedom-loving Americans to defend the democratic republic of our Founding Fathers—a republic that seeks to build an America “of, by, and for the people” – not the Trumpian oligarchs. During WWII, the American people came together regardless of political views to help rid the world of fascism. With the re-emergence of the fascist threat today, the task that confronts communists is to work within the emerging labor-led anti-monopoly coalition to destroy the fascist menace once and for all.
