September 11th, 2023 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Chilean Coup of 1973, in which the Popular Unity Government was overthrown by the Chilean Armed Forces led by the fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet, and Salvador Allende was assassinated. We will mark this anniversary by learning about the background of what was happening in Latin America in the late ’60s and early ’70s, learning about the coup itself and the suffering of Chile under the US-backed military junta of Pinochet.
