Soviet San Francisco (Short Documentary)

“Soviet San Francisco” is a short documentary on the longshoremen-led San Francisco General Strike of 1934.

American Communists played a supporting role in the strike, but the local government stated that it was a full-fledged “Bolshevik plot” in order to justify bringing in the National Guard with a lethal use of force. Besides killing two men in the crackdown, the local “College of Communism” at 121 Haight St was raided in addition to numerous other locations.

“Soviet San Francisco” includes an interview with the Spanish Civil War veteran Nate Thornton, who was a young Communist involved with the strike at the time.
